With the New Year underway, most people are thinking about goals and resolutions. We eagerly jump on board a new diet, an exercise routine, and organizing clutter. We make a list of things we want to accomplish so we can be a better person.
It reminds me of the new roundabout that was introduced in my neighborhood several months ago. I was still recovering from my fear of being hit from behind in my car because someone had persisted to continue driving at a stoplight and plowed into my halted car. Fortunately, I was not hurt, but my car was severely damaged. I thought I was okay but when I saw that roundabout, fear loomed its nasty head! My mind raced as I thought, “someone will hit me, or no one will yield.” I told myself that I could do this, but each day as I ventured on the road, I found myself looking for an alternative route. I even rationalized by telling myself that even though it may take longer to get to my destination, I was safe. I was so embarrassed to tell anyone. I had driven in roundabouts before, but my fear took over so I played the avoidance game.
One day, I forgot to take another route, and I suddenly came upon the roundabout with immense dread. I knew I had to go forward because cars were waiting behind me. I thought, “Do they know I am afraid?” Then I thought –this is a lot like life! We are afraid to step out and try something new or different. We are afraid someone will hurt us, belittle us, or laugh at us. But we as Christians have Jesus and in Isaiah 41:13 it says, “For I the Lord thy God, will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not, I will help thee.” We just have to step out in faith, trusting that God will take us through whatever we face. Perhaps, not the way we expect, but He will never leave or forsake us. He will get us through. Quickly, I ventured out and went through the roundabout successfully. I even found the right exit. I’m so glad I was courageous enough to fight my fear. It was a victory knowing that no matter what happened, Jesus was with me.
Perhaps you face obstacles that loom before you. Ask God to give you the courage to face your fears. He will give you mercy and grace to conquer those fears and live a victorious life.
